BOUNTIFUL – Two church leaders in British Columbia, Canada, were sentenced to house arrest by local courts, defending their belief in the practice of polygamy. One of them has 24 women and 149 children.
They are church leaders of the famous Mormon fundamentalist sect. The punishment was pronounced Tuesday.
A church leader, Winston Blackmore, 61, was convicted of having 24 women and 149 sons. Another leader, James Oler, 53, was convicted of having five women and 11 children.
Blackmore was sentenced to six months of house arrest. During this time, he worked for community services for 150 hours
While Oler was sentenced to three months of house arrest and worked 75 hours for community service
both were serving a sentence 12-month prison sentence
Sheri Ann Donegan, a British Columbia Supreme Court justice, says the two men work hard. They declared a blatant offense, including marrying a 15-year-old girl.
"She insists that not a punishment will prevent her from running her faith," said the judge in reference to Blackmore. "The concept of regret is foreign to him in this context," continued the judge, quoted by AFP Friday (29/6/2018).
In the past, Blackmore has defended the practice of polygamy that he lives. In court, the man was struggling to memorize the name of his wife
"I am guilty of practicing my religion and I said today that this is not the case. It's not because I deny it, "Blackmore told reporters a few years later.
The two men are listed as leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). The community is a Mormon sect that believes in plural marriage
They are both part of the Bountiful community, the mountainous region of British Columbia
Dozens of Blackmore supporters are in court and angry when the judge bed
