Pinrang, South Sulawesi – The Ministry of Agriculture (Kemtan) and the Regional Government (Pemda) have organized a maize harvest safari in several production centers. For South Sulawesi, November 11, 2018, the head of the Agricultural Research and Development Agency (Balitbangtan) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andi Muhammad Syakir, exploited the districts of Pinrang and Wajo, after having already visited the regency of Takalar.
For the Pinrang Regency, average productivity is 7 to 8 tonnes per hectare (ha). With a plantation area of 12 000 ha, it is estimated that 84 000 to 96 000 tonnes of dried maize (JPK) will be obtained.
"We appreciate the hard work of the Pinrang farmers so that their productivity is as high as we are.We are grateful for the production facilities, the machinery (agricultural machinery and equipment) and the improvement of irrigation, in order to contribute to productivity and to generate increased interest in agriculture, "said Syakir during the harvest in Pinrang on Sunday (11/11).
Syakir explained that Pinrang is a new development zone for corn as it is known to be one of Sulawesi's rice paddy fields. This development is possible because corn has great adaptability, which allows it to grow on bero paddy fields during the dry season using shallow well pumps.
"The development potential of new planting areas is still quite significant with shallow wells." Central and regional governments are still encouraging maize development in the Pinrang Regency and in other districts of South Sulawesi so to increase farmers' incomes, "said Syakir.
Syakir, Pinrang farmers are very interested in growing corn. The price of dry husk corn in farmers is improving. Currently, the farm-level price is 4,700 rupees per kilogram. This situation makes Pinrang farmers highly motivated to plant corn to improve their well-being.
In addition to Pinrang, Syakir is to harvest in the regency of Wajo with a plantation area of 45,875 ha. With a productivity of 5 to 6 tonnes per ha, this crop could reach 220 to 275,000 tonnes.
The government is continuing to boost maize productivity, particularly to meet national food needs. In the past four years, the government has dramatically increased corn production. In 2014, maize production in Indonesia amounted to 19.0 million tonnes and in 2015 to 19.6 million tonnes. In 2016, maize production increased again to 23.6 million tonnes, and in 2017, to 28.9 million tonnes. By 2018, it is estimated that maize production potential will reach 30 million tonnes.
