In a statement to local media, Mohammed Sabu said that maintaining a military presence in the Saudi kingdom could drag Malaysia into regional conflict.
Sabu pointed out that the Malaysian forces were not participating in ongoing operations in Yemen. It refers to the intervention led by the Saudis in neighboring countries
"Malaysia has always maintained its neutrality Malaysia has never pursued an aggressive foreign policy We have a good relationship with the country. Saudi Arabia, we also have good relations with Yemen, we We also have good relations with Iran.We also want to have good relations with Iraq, Syria, Qatar ", Sabu told the national news agency.
Sabu said the decision was made last week. Discussions with the Department of Foreign Affairs to determine the timing of troop return will soon begin.
Saudi Arabia, along with several other Arab countries, launched a military offensive in 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The attacks aim to reverse the progress made by the Houthi rebels after they took control of much of Yemen's territory in 2014.
It is unclear how many Malaysian troops are currently deployed in Saudi Arabia. But in 2015, former Prime Minister Najib Razak sent troops into the Gulf State to facilitate the evacuation of Malaysians in Yemen. [Al Jazeera/U-5]
