MEXICO CITY – A total of 133 politicians were killed before the Mexican elections that will be held today Sunday (1/7/2018) local time, where drug cartels are suspected of 39, to be the authors.

"This violence has been concentrated locally, at least 71% of these attacks have opposed elected officials and candidates in local elections," said Etellekt's director, Ruben Salazar, at the Mexican radio network Formula .

"This is the result of the very serious problems of local government," said Salazar, who was quoted as saying last night.

"In the 2012 elections, there are only nine politicians killed and one candidate, according to our records," he added.

More than 200,000 people have been killed in Mexico since the national army began attacking drug trafficking organizations in 2006.

"You must obey the orders of a hitman in Mexico," said Mexican political adviser Luis Carlos Ugalde, who is also a former chief of the federal electoral authority.

"They think that a politician will not work with them, negotiate, back down, and then kill him," Ugalde told AFP.

While a Reuters report Sunday (1/7/2018) reported that a Mexican journalist had been murdered in the state of Quintana Roo, in the south of the country.

Jose Guadalupe Chan Dzib was killed in the village of Saban, in the municipality of Jose Maria Morelos, announced the state government in a statement. Local media reported that he was shot dead in a bar around 10 pm Friday.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. A total of 45 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 1992, according to the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists.

Quintana Roo was once one of the safest states in Mexico, filled with Caribbean tourists and beach resorts, but things have deteriorated in recent years due to drug gangs.
