WELLINGTON – The close relations between New Zealand and Australia are experiencing tensions after Prime Minister while New Zealand accuses Australia of cheating the design of their flag and of ask Canberra to replace it.
New Zealanders refuse to change the flag during a referendum in 2015.
"We have a flag that we used for a long time, copied by Australia and that should have changed the flag "said New Zealand Prime Minister Winston Peters. Television New Zealand as reported Reuters Thursday (26/07/2018).
Peters's comments arise as ties between the two neighboring countries are tense after Australia began deporting more New Zealanders who were perceived as failing in a "character test".
Non-citizens may fail the test if they have a significant criminal record, ranging from badual abuse involving children, to a member of a criminal gang, involved in the trafficking of people or if their behavior does not show a good character.
The flags of both countries are blue and present the design of "Union Jack". as well as Southern Cross. The British flag is seen on the flag of New Zealand and the Australian flag as a symbol of the Commonwealth member states. The only difference between the two flags is that the design of New Zealand has four red stars, while Australia has six white stars.
