Russia said Saturday that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had agreed to send a group of influential politicians to the peace talks in Moscow, which would also include Taliban representatives.
Russia in August proposed to hold multilateral peace talks in Moscow and invited 12 countries and Taliban to participate in the summit the following month. However, the meeting was postponed after Ghani rejected the invitation, saying that negotiations with the Taliban should be led by the Afghan government.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the negotiations would be held on 9 November.
"For the first time, delegates from the Taliban political bureau in Doha will participate in high-level international meetings," he said.
The ministry has invited several other countries to send their representatives, including India, Iran, Pakistan, China and the United States.
In a previous Reuters report, Russia reportedly quietly invited a group of senior Afghan politicians to talk with the Taliban in Moscow, sources said on Friday.
Russia acted through President Ghani's government and angry officials in Kabul, who said it could disrupt US-backed peace efforts.
The invitation, handed over two months ago by Russian diplomats in Kabul, was confirmed to Reuters by six of the eight leaders, including former Afghan president Hamid Karzai or their senior advisers and politicians linked to the government. Afghan.
