Milan (ANTARA News) – Several regions of Italy have been affected by rains and high winds, killing at least 17 people and 14 million uprooted trees.
A German tourist was killed Friday by lightning on the island of Sardinia, while another, deceased from the same incident a few days ago, died at the hospital, announced Saturday the Italian Community Protection Agency.
A spokesman said that so far, the agency had received 17 reports according to which 17 people would have lost their lives due to bad weather.
Many of them died after being hit by fallen trees.
Coldiretti, an badociation of Italian agricultural companies, said in a statement that nearly 14 million trees had been spilled by strong winds, mainly in the northern region.
The northeastern region of Sicily to the southwest was hit by a storm. The districts of Trentino in the north and Veneto, districts around Venice, were the most affected. In the region, villages and roads were buried and isolated due to landslides.
In the Alps, near Belluno, about 100 km north of Venice, pines collide like matches.
The surface of the Comelico Superiore dam, which lies to the north near the Austrian border, is covered with fallen pines and falls into the Piave river.
"We need at least a century to get back to normal," Coldiretti said.
In Venice, many fields and walkways are submerged by large floods, the largest in the city of cbads in a decade.
Luca Zaia, governor of Veneto, said the storm in the region had caused at least 1 billion euros in losses.
