INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) – An Indianapolis entrepreneur has been selected for the 2021 Solver and Indigenous Communities class of MIT Solve. Katara McCarty is the founder of EXHALE, an emotional wellness app designed for Blacks, Indigenous people and women of color.
Solve is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology initiative designed to solve global challenges. The comrade class is split into six teams, and McCarty is one of seven tech-based social entrepreneurs included in the Antiracist Technology team.
“I am delighted and honored to have been selected to participate in the 2021 Solve and Indigenous Communities Class of Fellows,” McCarty said in a press release. “The Anti-Racism Technology course is all about using technology to support and expand the positive impact for Blacks, Indigenous people and people of color and I look forward to working with the Solve team to further EXHALE’s mission of provide resources for Blacks, Indigenous people and Women of Color to manage their mental health and emotional well-being.
In a September 2020 interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, McCarty said the EXHALE app offers meditations, coaching talks, guided breathing exercises, and guided visualizations.
“The app is for us as black and brunette women,” she said. “The language in there – I’m talking directly to our stressors, directly to the microaggressions we face, the systemic racism we face all the time, every day. I’m talking about our specific trauma, our hurt, our pain, our grief, our collective healing. “
As part of the fellow class, EXHALE will receive a $ 13,000 grant from Solve. An additional $ 200,000 will be available for teams and fellows, which will be paid out and announced throughout the program, which will conclude with a flagship event at MIT next May.
