“Insect Day! Has been a Lake Metroparks staple for over 30 years.
The event returned to Glen Penitentiary Reserve in Kirtland on September 12 after a scaled-down version in 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s wonderful to be able to do that kind of thing and it’s mostly outside, so we’re able to get people out and keep them outside and (at a distance) from each other.” , Kirsten, Nature Park Manager at Lake Metroparks Children’s Interpretive School. said Taurus.
The theme for this year’s event was “Bugs: They Need Us, We Need Them”.
“Processes like pollination, agriculture, insects are all integral to this,” Bull said. “Without bugs, we don’t have plants, plants can’t reproduce, so we can’t have things like vegetables, apples, all those fun things that we love to eat.”
Activities were scattered throughout the park where children could learn about different types of insects including centipedes, silkworms and hoverflies. Those who participated in at least five of the activities received a “diploma” in bugology.
The event raised awareness not only of the importance of insects, but also of the little things children can do to protect them.
“About 75 percent of the world’s insect population is expected to disappear over the next 50 years,” she said. “It’s a huge lack of biodiversity and we can do simple things at home like catch a spider in a cup and put it outside instead of killing it.”
Bull said the children are at an open-minded age.
“They love creepy critters, so it’s great to make them appreciate these things from a young age.”
Next week Glen Penitentiary will hold its “Snakes, turtles and more” noon to 4 p.m. event on September 19. The event will feature live reptiles and amphibians, information and activity stations, and “help reveal what makes amphibians and reptiles so special,” according to Metroparks.
