Intermittent fasting improves quality of sleep, helps manage diabetes, heart disease

WASHINGTON – Intermittent fasting has become very popular among the dieting community over the past decade. Now, a new study is adding more fuel to this fire after researchers found the weight loss trend can help people better manage conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Researchers also find that intermittent fasting also contributes to the overall quality of sleep.

The authors say that a time-limited diet, where you eat your daily calories within an eight to ten hour window, is a powerful tool for managing metabolic disease. For people struggling with blood sugar, cholesterol, and heart issues, losing weight is a key part of preventing serious health complications.

“People who are trying to lose weight and lead healthier lives should be more careful about when and what they eat. Time-limited eating is an easy-to-follow and effective eating strategy that requires less mental math than counting calories, ”says Satchidananda Panda, Ph.D., of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in a press release. “Intermittent fasting can improve a person’s sleep and quality of life, as well as reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.”

The Panda team found that the expression of a person’s genes, hormone levels and metabolism increases and decreases at different times of the 24-hour day. By aligning our eating schedules with the body’s internal clock, the study finds that patients with metabolic problems can reduce the health burden of several chronic diseases.

“Eating at random times breaks the synchrony of our internal schedule and makes us prone to disease,” says Panda. “Intermittent fasting is a lifestyle that anyone can adopt. It can help eliminate health disparities and allows everyone to live healthy and fulfilling lives. “

Previous studies have shown that intermittent fasting also helps reshape a person’s gut microbiome and even improves memory.

The study appears in the journal Endocrine examinations.
