– The International Space Station has earned the honor of becoming an official toy of the LEGO universe.

The outpost in orbit has surpassed the votes of more than 22,000 LEGO enthusiasts to become the next real spacecraft of the Danish toy company to become a toy brick model. The space station garnered more than 45% of the votes cast – 10,438 votes to be exact – in the survey organized for the 10th anniversary of LEGO Ideas from May 20th to June 4th on the company's website.

"An incredible feat in [the] short voting period of the fans. He continues to show the huge desire for space and space exploration of the LEGO Ideas community, "LEGO Ideas team member Hasan Jensen wrote in a blog post announcing the winner on Tuesday, June 4th.

The International Space Station (ISS) model, designed by Christoph Ruge (Germany), was fraught with three other preconceived ideas that had been qualified and later overtaken by the LEGO production review process. LEGO organized the fan vote to mark the 10th anniversary of its LEGO Ideas website, which invites fans to come up with new sets. Projects that reach 10,000 supporters are reviewed by LEGO for possible production and sales.

"The last few weeks have been busy with over 22,000 LEGO Ideas members having voted for their favorite model from the last four submissions to the 10K club selected to be part of this extraordinary 10th Anniversary Review and Fan Vote," wrote Jensen.

The space station competition included a scaled-down version of Nathan Sawaya's "Yellow" sculpture of "The Art of Brick", a set of miniature Sega arcade machines and a animated extraterrestrial Stian model of Disney. The Stitch group was ranked second in the ballot with 5,739 votes, followed by the Sega arcade machines (3,788 votes) and Small Yellow (2,924 votes).

"Congratulations to XCLD [Ruge’s LEGO Ideas username] whose design has reached an unprecedented level [sic] 45.6% of the votes cast, "said Jensen.

"I do not speak! [sic] Thank you all for your overwhelming support !! It's a moment of celebration !! ", exclaimed Ruge on Twitter.

Ruge first introduced his space station model to LEGO ideas in 2014. After being rejected by the LEGO review team a year later, he reworked his drawing, adapting it to the space shuttle included in the LEGO ideas "Women of NASA". together, which was published in 2017.

The smallest space station in Ruge was qualified for revision in 2018. But again, LEGO reserved it in February (2019). Now the fan vote has given the Ruge space station model the "start" for production.

"The design of the XCLD International Space Station will now go into the official development phase of the product, as in regular reviews, and as always, we will not be able to reveal any details, including price, design, etc. launch of the decor in 2020, "explained Jensen.

The assembly of the real space station began in 1998 with the launch and connection of the first Russian and American components in orbit. The first shipping team embarked in 2000.

The launch of the planned LEGO International Space Station in 2020 will coincide with the 20th anniversary of continued human presence in the on-orbit laboratory. It will also be the third time LEGO has produced an ISS, but only the second game will be sold to the public.

In 2003, LEGO teamed up with Discovery Channel to market a set of 162 Space Station bricks in its under construction configuration.

Eight years later, as part of an educational partnership between LEGO and NASA, JAXA's flight engineer Expedition 29, Satoshi Furukawa, assembled a LEGO-designed model of the full-on-orbit laboratory aboard the real ISS . But this set had a major limit: it could only be built in space. On Earth, the model would collapse under the effect of gravity.
