IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – An Iowa City web developer uses his skills to help Iowans find COVID-19 vaccine appointments when they open in real time.

When Brian Finley became eligible for the vaccine on Monday, he learned how difficult it can be to get an appointment. He decided to use his programming skills to use data from local pharmacies and put all the information in one place – on Twitter. “I was eligible and several of my close family were, and I think I had the same experience as a lot of other people when it comes to simple frustration. Constantly refresh yourself or try to find an appointment for a vaccine, ”says Finley.

The account, @IAVaccineAlerts, provides real-time updates on the appointments of Hy-Vee, Walgreens and CVS sites across Iowa.

The account went live on Wednesday and it has already gained more than 6,000 followers – helping dozens of people find dates for themselves and their loved ones. “It’s just a flood of people thanking me, I heard people say they were in tears after getting immunization appointments from their loved ones and family members,” said Finley, thing, I almost felt guilty that I didn’t put it there. Simply because everyone – most people – wants the vaccine, and there really is nothing wrong with everyone getting the vaccine.

Finley says he recommends people turn on alerts for the account, as open spots can disappear in minutes.
