The disease appeared at a small commercial dog breeding establishment in Marion County, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Stewardship of Iowa in a statement.

Animals and facilities are quarantined as dogs undergo testing, the department said.

Although the threat to pet owners is low, "dog breeders, veterinarians and anyone who comes in contact with blood, tissues and fluids during birth may be at greater risk and should consult their doctor, "said the department.

"If pet owners have recently acquired a new small breed dog from Marion Co., they must contact their veterinarian," the department said.

An information leaflet on the disease, published by the University of Iowa, recommends to people handling reproductive tissue and helping to birth newborn puppies to wear protective clothing, including gloves and masks.

Human infection with the disease is rare, said the university. This requires close contact with infected dogs. Infections cause flu-like symptoms, including fever and back pain, as well as joint pain. According to the university, cases can rarely involve the nervous system, the eyes or the heart.

AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport, Inc., an animal rescue organization located in De Soto, Iowa, quarantined 32 dogs bought at auction from a breeder while they were undergoing tests.

"We have not received any results yet," the organization said on Facebook. "So we closed our shelter for the next 30 days."

"This is one more reason to ADOPT and not to SHOP! Please pray for our sweet babies who finally have the chance to have a happy life."
