IPhone 13 is rumored to feature smaller notch cameras and pro models to use a larger image sensor

Apple’s iPhone 13 series will feature a redesigned Face ID system that will allow for a smaller notch at the top of the screen, according to a new report released today.

Rumor stems from a successful Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes, whose supply chain sources also claim that the ultra-wide-angle lens of Apple’s next-gen iPhones should be upgraded.

Next-gen iPhones’ Face ID system will see some design changes with the size of the notch at the top of the screen shrinking and their ultra-wide-angle lens upgraded from 5P to 6P, according to the sources.

The new design integrates Rx, Tx and a flood illuminator in the same camera module, similar to that of a LiDAR scanner in the rear camera module, to allow for smaller notch sizes, according to the sources.

This is the third time we’ve heard rumors of a thinner or shallower notch for the iPhone 13‌. Japanese site Mac Otakara previously cited sources within the Chinese supply chain saying the same thing, while the weaker “Ice Universe” also claimed that a smaller notch will come this year.

Both rumors suggest that instead of being reduced in width, the notch can be reduced in height to make it less noticeable, so it is possible that the 2021 ‌iPhone‌ models have a notch of the same length but not as high.

Today’s story claims that the new Face ID camera module will be supplied by Korea-based Foxconn and LG Innotek while the front camera modules will be supplied by O-Film.

The sources revealed that the Pro family of next-gen iPhones will feature a newly designed CIS, while the other models will adopt the CIS used by the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ devices. The CIS will be provided primarily by Sony, according to the sources.

Rumors come from the same DigiTimes story that appeared in a preview Wednesday, claiming that the entire ‌iPhone 13‌ lineup will feature optical image stabilization by sensor shifting.
