At the end of the most controversial week of the year. summer GAA had us the first seismic shock of a championship that stumbled on predictable lines. And maybe the saga inspired Kildare's greatest performance for a decade. Cian O'Neill had galvanized his county, but the pressure was there for the players to occur.
They left at a fast pace and gained five points. The ball was kicked more often in the first 10 minutes than during the whole match in Enniskillen, which made it a very enjoyable game. Daniel Flynn has been wreaking havoc and Kildare has played football. Still, Mayo are kings of pride, pride in themselves and pride in their team and they beat six on the rebound. If the France-Argentina match was much more absorbing than Cavan-Tyrone, this match was in a different league. Diarmuid O 'Connor found his place in the midfield and he and Aidan O' Shea dominated after the first quarter until the last 10 minutes
where there were doubts about Kildare's appetite for a junk, the second half responded to each of them as they traded points and shots; all players will be sore today and recovery for next week will occupy the sport science department in the Kildare backroom team. The Cribbins, Flynns and Mick O 'Grady were all gorgeous and their bench had a bigger impact than Mayo's. That was understandable with the injuries of Tom Parsons and Seamus O Shea
Kildare demonstrated what we all knew. They have a lot of talent and this victory will give them a mbadive boost. It was the day they became men after turning back the battle several times over the last year. Nobody will question their bottle now.
Mayo, as always, died with his boots. Not All-Ireland for some of their biggest players who will carry this burden in the grave. Of course, football is not so important, but try to tell Keith Higgins, Andy Moran, Colm Boyle, Lee Keegan and a few more in the weeks, months and years to come. The O-Sheas will surely stay, but that's the end of Mayo as we've known them for a decade and in truth I feel some sadness in that. They are heroes who go to the well and find water every time.
It was a wonderful match and Kildare and Cian O'Neill had a great week. The important thing for O'Neill now is not to let this go to his head or to the players' heads. It's a giant leap but bigger battles are waiting. What a wonderful entertainment.
It always amazes me things normally done and said by men. The match finally took place in Newbridge, but there was a lot of humble pie being wiped off faces. The CCCC has not emerged with much credit and the hard line that Ned Quinn and Feargal McGill have adopted was surprising. These are not usually men who exercise this way. Once Kildare said that they were not playing at Croke Park, the match was over for the CCCC.
In the end, Alan Milton, GAA Communications Manager, was moved to try to put some kind of gloss on it. He should have just said that we made it a complete and complete horlick. Trying to make it clear that health and safety issues had been resolved between Monday and Wednesday, it was insulting everyone's intelligence.
The real reason was that if the CCCC pushed that to the limit and threw Kildare, there would have been a call that Kildare would probably have won. It was as simple as that. The championship could have been delayed if Croke Park had not surrendered.
The CCCC had already lost in the court of public opinion as most people were supporting Kildare. Of course, Newbridge is a dump, but that is their discharge and so they had the right to play it. The land has a beautiful surface. Crowd restrictions are on the top too. This health and safety makes me daft and there is an urgent need to review all stages.
Why is the crowd restricted by 10% simply because it's a complete game? Many things about grbad banks are stupid. Are children safer on concrete terraces than on the grbad? The field could easily have taken another 5,000 followers, with Kilcullen three-quarters empty while Kildare was outnumbered by Mayo's armada
The Newbridge locker room could contain one horse or three calves. Maybe the inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture could even judge them unfit for that. It's there that the best county teams are supposed to go out. Of course, they all come prepared now and I'm sure most club players go home to take a shower after the games there. Whatever it may be, everything is going to improve soon but Kildare has dealt a blow for the average person. And the message was to not just think that we could be buried.
In contrast, the first half of the Tyrone-Cavan game was just one of those horrible, modern games. If the definition of madness is to continue doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result then Cavan was entirely guilty. They withdrew from the defense and when they hit Tyrone's defensive wall, they usually went back and threw the ball back over and over again.
Cavan needed a minibus to get the defense players to attack. Heat is not an excuse. Good players thrive to the extreme. The role of Seánie Johnston was obviously to launch attacks with penetrating bullets, but I could have played his role while he was wandering with most of his huge possessions sent back, a good point despite everything .
Tyrone continually returned the ball had many more individual skills. They shot their scores much more easily than Cavan and seemed much more comfortable with their style.
Yet, Cavan was cast a lifeline when Martin Reilly ended a hopeful kick for a point and spun at the net. Why did not they do it more often? Their best player Gearóid McKiernan then took the start and scored a point. In the first half, Tyrone managed to escape but Cavan pushed in the second half and meant that McKiernan was more dominant.
His performance should have inspired an uprising and Cavan started the match with much more success. intensity in the second half, but clbad outweighs the effort.
Still, Tyrone has absorbed it and reached the coast. They were much more athletic, pacey and skilled. If McKiernan was the best player, Peter Harte, Niall Sludden and Ronan O'Neill, on his arrival, were excellent. No one will want to meet Tyrone but there should be a health warning with their matches.
The standard was not good but it looks like Tyrone is bound for the Super 8. However, they were pretty neglected and are still a bit late on the higher sides. They have not changed since last year when their style was chosen by Dublin.
