The Open Championship is the world's most unique in men's golf. From places to weather to style and night to American fans, so many things make this major different from others.
Another subtle way that the great general does not notice is the T-shirt. This time of year in Scotland, there is about 17 hours of day. Unless the weather becomes grotesque, you can play golf anytime of the day. This gives the R & D great flexibility in setting British Open times. There's no crazy race for 156 Sun-up players at Sun-Down, as they do at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. The Masters have a much smaller field, usually around 90 players, which gives them a similar flexibility at a time of year when daylight is much more limited.
The Open, however, continues to roll from one tee, unlike the other two full field majors of 156 players. It is a tradition. It also makes a lot more sense given the in-and-out nature of golf links, where the 9th green and the 10th tee do not always gather near the clubhouse.
The mere suggestion of a departure in two starts causes an uproar there. The R & A made the dramatic, disastrous move to use two tees on a Saturday a few years ago at Royal Liverpool because of imminent storms. Some reacted as if they were ripping off an inviolable rule from the Open, but the move was paying off and the game was done before the unpleasant storms hit Hoylake. Everything has ended at the hour. But it was the first and only time that shared tees were put into play in the history of the Open for 147 years.
There is no such disastrous weather forecast this year. starts at 6:35 local to Carnoustie, which is 1:35 ET back to the United States. Golf Channel maintains its custom of going live – we will do it live! – From the very first group of each day. They will be broadcast at 1:30 pm ET and will offer a broadcast menu for a 14.5 hour broadcast. To give you an idea of the spread that this Scottish light allows, the last tee time does not go until 16:16. local and plays deeply in the night.
The R & A also did not capitulate to the media or fans and put all the power names together, as we see more and more each week on the PGA Tour and the majors. Instead, they sprinkled them around and through the t-shirt. Tiger does not play with Rory and Justin and DJ and Phil etc. Maybe two big names are together, but it's usually an international mix and rarely consolidated. It makes for a full day of interesting start times TV time.
