The DCU Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo) will lead a 2.4 million euro project over three years to tackle the problem of misinformation by tracking and reporting misinformation online, especially via social media.
Funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission, Provenance will focus on finding solutions that allow people to distinguish between original information and manipulated information or misinformation.
The project will develop a "verification layer" that will use advanced digital technologies for multimedia badysis (including forensics of images) to record changes to content and identify similar content elements. A "verification indicator" will contextualize the different content elements with the relevant information, including the date the content was recorded, by whom and all subsequent transactions. The project's solutions will be particularly useful for consumers of new and political information, but also for content creators who want to protect their content from unauthorized manipulation or use.
Beginning in December under the direction of Associate Professor Jane Suiter, the project team will include academic and industrial partners from Ireland, Spain, the Czech Republic and the United States. Austria. Irish contributors include the SFI Adapt research center for digital content technologies at Trinity College Dublin and content intelligence company NewsWhip.
"The speed and volume of misinformation on social media can undermine democracy, business, and social reputation," said Dr. Suiter.
"This project will track online content and manipulate it across web and social media platforms to help consumers and businesses not only keep track of their own content, but also trust content that's important." they see online. "
