Alan Taylor was hired to direct a film before the TV series "The Sopranos".
The award-winning director directed a series of popular TV shows in the past, including "The Sopranos", as well as movies such as "Thor: The Dark World" and "Terminator Genisys".
Taylor directed a number of episodes of the hit television series – which starred James Gandolfini and Lorraine Bracco – and he will come back some of the same characters, albeit in a younger look, when he takes control of "The Many Saints Of Newark", according to The Wrap.
The long-awaited film will be released in New Jersey in the 1960s and will be based on a script written by David Chase and Lawrence Konner.
However, the specific details of the plot and an expected release date for the film have not yet been revealed.
The film – which will be placed among racial riots in the United States – will be released via New Line and the company's president, Toby Emmerich, has it's delighted that Chase – who directed the episodes of the original series – decided to return to The Sopranos.
He said, "David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our HBO colleagues, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and expand, the Soprano universe into a feature film."
The television series – which saw Gandolfini star as gangster Tony Soprano – ran from 1997 to 2007, and won a host of awards, including 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes.
