The Netflix film also stars Danielle Macdonald, Luke Benward, Odeya Rush, Dove Cameron, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Harold Perrineau and Maddie Baillio.
The first trailer for Dumplin’ was released Wednesday.
The Netflix original film follows plus-size teenager Willowdean “Dumplin'” Dickson (Danielle Macdonald), who is the daughter of former beauty queen Rosie (Jennifer Aniston). When Willowdean signs up for one of her mother’s pageants in protest, other misfit contestants follow in her footsteps. The new contestants soon revolutionize the small Texas town.
Anne Fletcher directed the film, while Kristin Hahn penned the script. Luke Benward, Odeya Rush, Dove Cameron, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Harold Perrineau and Maddie Baillio round out the cast.
The trailer opens with Willowdean and her friend Ellen (Rush) as they relax on floats in a pool. “I don’t know how I’m gonna survive my mom’s pageant season,” says Willowdean.
Another scene shows Rosie’s dedication to pageants as Willowdean and Ellen pull her out of the backseat of a car in an attempt to not wrinkle her gown.
“My name is Willowdean Dixon,” she says in a voiceover as clips of her everyday life play. She explains that most people call her “Will,” though her mother calls her “Dumplin.'” Willowdean then shares that her mother’s status as a former beauty pageant queen and local celebrity often gets in the way of her role as a mother.
The trailer cuts to scene that shows Rosie, Willowdean and Ellen backstage at a pageant. A contestant mistakes Ellen for Rosie’s daughter and is shocked to learn that Willowdean is actually her daughter. “And that’s when I decided enough was enough,” she continues in the voiceover. She later tells Ellen, “I think I’m gonna sign up for the pageant.”
Willowdean explains that her enrollment in the pageant would be “like a protest in heels.” When Millie (Baillio) sees that Willowdean is signing up, she announces that she would also like to participate in the pageant.
A group of teenage misfits soon joins Willowdean to train for the pageant, including taking dance clbades and going to drag queen shows.
The trailer also teases a potential love story between Willowdean and Bo (Benward). “Willowdean Dixon, I think you’re beautiful,” he tells her. “To hell with anyone else who’s made you feel less than that.”
A montage of clips follows that shows Willowdean and her friends embracing their new personas as pageant contestants. The trailer concludes with Rosie telling her daughter, “That was truly a surprise.” The mother is brought to tears and blow-dries her face to prevent her makeup from running.
Dumplin’ will become available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 7. Watch the full trailer above.
