Floyd Mayweather has responded to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s bumper new contract with DAZN.
Earlier this week, ‘Canelo’ put pen to paper on a five-year, 11-fight deal worth $365 million with the streaming service and Mayweather clearly doesn’t take kindly to another boxer making millions.
Mayweather, who handed Alvarez his only career defeat in 2013, has pulled no punches in response to the Mexican’s deal as he mocked Alvarez for testing positive for a banned substance ahead of his rematch with Gennady Golovkin.
“It didn’t matter if Canelo ate his PED steak or not this night, this was by far the easiest fight of my career!” Mayweather wrote on Instagram.
“Connor McQuitter was a way better fighter than Canelo’s cheating bad and I beat the brakes off him too! It takes me 36 mins or less to make $300 million plus.
“It literally takes me 1 night and 1 fight to make what you might make in 5 years and 11 fights! So really, who’s still winning? You do the math!”
With Mayweather seemingly focused on bouts with mixed martial artists exclusively now that he is in his forties, it is unlikely that he will be open to a rematch with ‘Canelo’, who has developed into a much more dangerous fighter since their initial meeting five years ago.
The 50-0 boxing legend came out of retirement last year for a lucrative clash with McGregor and he is now toying with the idea of dusting off his gloves in order to welcome current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov to the ring.
And as much as he would like to claim vengeance against Mayweather, ‘Canelo’ isn’t holding his breath for a rematch.
“He doesn’t want to risk a second fight with me,” Alvarez told ESPN. “You know, if he wants to return and have fights, he should return and fight me. It would be tough for him but I know that he wouldn’t want to take that risk.”
