The fourth generation Ford Focus is already on sale throughout Europe and will eventually hit the US showrooms as an inspired variant of the active crossover next year. For the new year, the vehicle is completely new both inside and out, offering a renewed engine range, a new automatic gearbox and a more upscale cabin. If you were already wondering what powertrain the hottest ST modification will use, we are happy to announce that we finally have unofficial information about it.
Unfortunately, the new Focus ST will not go to the larger 2.3-liter EcoBoost of the Focus RS, but, according to a new report from Motoring will retain its current turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. This is not bad news after all, as previous reports have suggested that the model could switch to Ford's new 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, but the company's engineers decided that the four-banger is a better option. The current Focus ST has the same 2.0-liter engine, which delivers 252 horsepower (188 kilowatts) and 270 foot-pounds (366 Newton-meters) of torque. We expect the new EcoBoost to be slightly more powerful and, according to our source, it will eventually be offered with an automatic vane gearbox. The identity of this transmission remains a mystery, but most likely Ford will use its new eight-speed torque converter. A double clutch gearbox is also a possibility.
The new ST will have a multi-link rear suspension as standard, layout now optional on regular focus. It rolls on standard 18-inch wheels with the option of 19-inch tires and will present a readjusted version of the already fairly precise handling system that's found in the standard Focus.
According to previous reports, a diesel-powered ST is also in the cards for the European market. The sports hatch (and wagon) with an ignition compression engine currently accounts for about half of Focus ST's sales, and Ford plans to stick to the 2.0-liter engine under the hood.
