The Irish hopes of the San Francisco World Rugby Sevens Series were swept away by heavy blows for the men's and women's teams.
This competition is played on a direct basis, normally the first round is a group phase, and in the early hours of Friday night, the women's team was beaten 45-0 by New Zealand in quarters final, while the men were defeated 45-7 by South Africa.
The men's team opened with a 17-12 win over Chile, Hugo Keenan, Billy Dardis and James Leo O. Brien who qualified for the trials.
But they were mastered by the Springboks, who are ranked number one in sevens and were favorites before the tournament.
South Africans led 19-0 at halftime and only one try of Terry Kennedy converted by Keenan prevented a full shutout
