The same rule applies when a car manufacturer aims an emulator to emulate

BMW would seem to prove it with the way the company locks its X4 SUV Coupé more performant on the Porsche Macan . 19659006] Realistically, the company has cheaper lenses for its more practical vehicles, like the Mercedes GLC Coupe.

But the desire to catch the Macan means that even though the X4 is heavily based on the X3 platform, BMW has to spend money to bring it up to date, what Macan drivers or potential buyers seem to demand.

After a short and brisk walk in the new Beemer, it would be presumptuous to suggest that the company has achieved or not achieved what it seeks.

But he certainly managed to find a much larger piece

Remains to be found whether it is enough to deter many people from placing their money where their Macan is.

It is certainly larger: 81 mm longer (4,752 mm), 37 mm wider (at 1,918mm, which is the same as the Macan, incidentally), 3mm larger (1,621) and with an increase of 54mm in the wheelbase (at 2.864).

It is also 50kg lighter, and the company claims the lowest coefficient of drag 0.30) in the segment

Of course, the sound of the wind was not a problem thanks to its cut shape (of which I I'm not crazy, I've never been and I'll never be.)

Free space was more than decent. Indeed, there was surprisingly good space at the back (when I placed the front seat at my usual preference I had a lot of space behind me).

Piece in the boot is only slightly down on the X3 (at a 525 liters).

BMW says the new dimensions and less dramatic roof pitch (aided greatly by the rear spoiler effect) reduce the sharp cut line of the old model. Does this mean that it can no longer be called an X3 with its roof cut off? Yes, says BMW

But there is a price to pay. There was poor visibility at the back because of the tighter rear configuration.

Much of the money spent to make a harder effort to confront the Macan was aimed at widening the track for a better … road performance

There was, certainly, more driving net and a more direct direction, but we found it at its best in Sport mode. The comfort mode, for one reason or another, appeared a little jerky and loose.

Our route took us on a variety of roads in the Cotswolds where this wider track played its part in some excellent turns. The car felt well planted and safe to walk.

The driving position is lower than the X3 but excellent. Our test car had 21-inch wheels – still a great influence on handling and driving in general.

By the way, the models we examined with 19-inch wheels did not fill the wheel wells too well. Note that the M Sport X versions are equipped with 20-inch wheels.

The entry-level pack is the X4 2-liter 190hp Sport with All Wheel Drive (xDrive), M sport suspension on 18-year-old alloys, variable sport steering as well as 8-speed automatic and three-zone air conditioning as standard.

Prices start at € 67,100. That equates to around € 8,500, more than an equivalent X3-possible.

The starting price of the Macan 2-liter gasoline is 75,762 €, but the comparisons can be odious in terms of power, equipment, etc.

People (BMW predicts 85pc-90pc) will go for sport trim version M, with 2-liter diesel, 190hp under hood.

There will also be a 265hp 3-liter diesel. And BMW has lined up two performance models, but not full M, for later in the year: an M40d diesel and an M40i oil with revised suspension and other goodies.

Inside the car we tested and tested the Beemer modern dashboard, the central controls and the touch screen. They are smart and the interaction is intuitive and straightforward, although it is a little functional given what some rivals are creating in the cabs nowadays.

Everything comes back to the Macan (v the M40i and the M40d) where BMW claims that gasoline has 14hp more and is a half-second faster at 100kmh and 1.5 seconds with diesel.

However, the 2-liter diesel version sets the tone. And he buzzes quietly even when he is pushed hard on the diet. Impressive.

It's a tight set, with good balance, features and workout. His creation followed the Macan. Can he go beyond it? I'm not sure, but it's a much improved proposition in itself. Sometimes it's better to focus on what you have than what others offer you.

• Elsewhere, the weather was perfect for an idyllic safari in the 2-liter (192-hp) MINI Convertible across the glorious Cotswolds. part of an open day for readers in a range of cars that have been given facelifts and upgrades. Has not driven the cabrio for a long time; 15 minutes of pure escape with the hood down.

The i8 Coupe has also been updated with added specs and a few touches here and there. The amazing appearance and the dazzling speed of the straight lines put aside the difficult driving considerations in the short term.

And there was the opportunity to try the rechargeable hybrid 2 Series Sports Tourer, which costs € 40,950 (plus shipping costs of € 875 after € 7,500 SEAI grants and VRT)

Nice car but the SUVs are raking this end of the market lately.
