How Super 8 works

This is, of course, the first year of the Super 8.

The round robin system, which replaces the traditional quarterfinals of the SFC All-Ireland, was voted at the Congress from last year.

the motion is pbaded with 74% of the vote and will remain in place for three years as a trial.

This phase consists of two groups of four teams, the four provincial winners and four qualified.

Each team qualified for the "Quarterfinals of Ireland" will play the other three teams in its group.

This consists of a home game, an away game and a game at Croke Park. The details of the first phase were published this afternoon.

Group 1 includes the winners of Munster Kerry, Galway, Connacht Champion, and Kildare and Monaghan, both of whom have crossed the back door.

Group 2 comprised of champions Leinster and Ulster, Dublin and Donegal plus Tyrone and Roscommon, the only Super 8 team that did not start the year in Division 1 of Allianz League, qualifications.

The two teams that finish at the top of each group qualify for All-Ireland. semi-finals with the other four out of the league.

In the case of two or more teams finishing the points level, the next qualifying criterion will be the head-to-head result between the two teams.

If this game (s) ends in a draw, the score difference determines the position of the table. If these criteria are not enough to separate the teams, goals scored come into play and, finally, a play-off.

Group 1 winners will play second in Group 2 and the opposite will apply to Group 2 winners.

The semi-finals will take place on August 11/12 at Croke Park.

AIDAN COLUMN O 'ROURKE: Nature vs Nurture: Super 8 to reveal the best evolved teams

Last week, Donegal met the GAA to ask for clarification on the situation where Dublin plays two games at Croke Park, their home ground, while all other teams play a home game.

The GAA stated: "If the Central Council collectively felt that non-structural changes to certain aspects of the Championship were required, that these could be submitted to the Annual Congress in 2019 for consideration."

This effectively means that this arrangement can be changed for next season.
