Rhys McClenaghan revealed that a recent shoulder injury had compromised his chances of winning a triple gold crown of major titles this year after being eliminated from the World Gymnastics Championships in Doha.
The 19-year-old pommel was overturned midway through the qualifying heats, posting a modest score of 11.066, which is far from allowing him to win a spot in the final early next week.
Although disappointing after his previous gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships, McClenaghan emphasized the importance of continuing to focus on the bigger picture.
McClenaghan said, "I had a shoulder injury a week and a half ago, so I may have done three full routines in training, compared to almost 100 routines in front of the Commonwealth and the United States. Europeans.
"This led to a slightly negative state of mind and, to be honest, the withdrawal went through the spirit, but I think it was important to come here and to stay focused on Olympic qualification.
"I've been through a lot of hard times this year, so I'm happy to win two major titles, and despite what happened here, I'll be leaving 2018 as a very happy guy."
McClenaghan's year is not quite over and he plans, if his injury allows, to travel to Cottbus in Germany early next month for the first individual World Cups with a direct Olympic qualification at stake.
McClenaghan's rival, two-time Olympic champion Max Whitlock, who won gold in two previous major events this year, was to enter qualifying with the rest of his British teammates later on Friday.
