Johnny Sexton in the running for the World Rugby Player of the Year Award

Johnny Sexton could become the first Irishman, in 17 years, to be crowned World Rugby player in the year after being named the only player in the northern hemisphere on the list.

Sexton was listed alongside New Zealand's Beauden Barrett, South African Faf de Klerk, New Zealand's Rieko Ioane and South Africa's Malcolm Marx after an excellent year including a Six Nations victory with l & # 39; Ireland.

The selection was selected by a jury composed of Richie McCaw, winner of the Rugby World Cup, John Smit, George Gregan, Maggie Alphonsi and former England coach Clive Woodward, alongside the Irish. Brian O'Driscoll, Fabien Galthié and Agustín Pichot.

Fans and media were given the chance to vote for those who, in their view, deserved the award. Now captains and international coaches will join the jury for a final vote to determine the winner.

Sexton is the oldest nominee at the age of 33. The kicker Leinster has helped Ireland to climb to second place in the world rankings and win a first win against Australia in 39 years.

However, perhaps the most memorable moment for Sexton was his last-minute goal to give Ireland a spectacular victory in its Six Nations opening match played in France, marking the start from the trip to the glory of the Grand Slam.

If Sexton must win this award and become the first Irishman since Keith Wood in 2001, he will have to overcome strong opposition, including All Black Beauden Barrett, who is aiming for the title for a third consecutive year.

Barrett has scored seven tries in eight tries in 2018, including six in the Bledisloe Cup series against Australia, including a record four of the 30 points scored at Eden Park and should face Sexton later this month when Ireland meets New Zealand in Dublin.

De Klerk and Marx are the two Springbok nominees after helping Rbadie Erasmus's team get back on top of world rugby, while All Black Ioane is the youngest candidate at 21.

The prize will be awarded at the World Rugby Awards at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo on November 25, alongside the women's prize which will be awarded: Pauline Bourdon (France), Fiao & # 39; o Faamausili (New Zealand), Gaëlle Hermet ( France), Safi N & # 39; Diaye (France) and Jessy Trémoulière (France).
