A bunch of star performers on a track does not make a summer hit, and that's nowhere more evident than in DJ Khaled's latest single, "No Brainer," released Friday.
The ubiquitous screaming leader enlists Justin Bieber, Quavo and Chance the Rapper in this summer bop of his upcoming album Father of Asahd ; the quartet had previously collaborated on the single "I'm the One" of 2017. But while "I'm the One" had an infectious beating and a palpable energy (and eventually reached number 1 on the charts ), "No Brainer" looks more like a stereotypical and timid attempt to replicate the success of last year.
The Bieber-sung hook and DJ Khaled's slogans shouted from the sideline are all present, but are just not doing the trick this time around. The Chance couplet is heard, and the whole song begins to decline after the third chorus. The video accompaniment is also a little forced. This is both an advertisement for vaping, Ciroc, and the Cardi B Fashion Nova approved clothing line, with the Biebs offering some curious dance moves between errant product placements. The only redeeming moments come when the camera pans the adorable young son of DJ Khaled, Asahd, happily perched on Bieber's lap.
Critics and fans were quick to christen "No Brainer" as the official song of the summer of 2018, while ignoring the fact that for a song to receive this award legitimately, it must in fact slap. While "No Brainer" has, in theory, all the right ingredients for a certifiable summer bop, in practice the song is somehow sucks.
There was a discussion of other songs that could be the song of the summer of 2018, with the melody of trapi-meets-salsa "I Like It" being the most obvious favorite. As explained by Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone the reggaeton-inspired single from Invasion of Privacy "appears to have been chemically concocted in a laboratory mad scientist to be the ruling song of the summer of 2018 "
She is not wrong. It's almost impossible to get down to my block in Bed-Stuy, or in any block of town, without hearing "I Like It" explode in the apartments and windows of the cars – a signifier revealing of a summer song. The characteristics of J. Balvin and Bad Bunny on the track only improve it, if it is possible.
The recently released album Drake Scorpion also gave serious contenders to the song of the summer. "In My Feelings", "Nice for What" and "God's Plan" are all bops, each with an ubiquity that seems appropriate, if not necessary, for the song of the summer of 2018. There are the viral dance challenge badociated with "In My Feelings" which gave us the gold of Instagram's Will Smith and a reprimand from the NTSB after people started to jump out of their cars. "In My Feelings" also provided fans with a new look. Drake's life to scrutinize now that he eventually became father: who is Kiki, and does she love him? The "Nice for What" from New Orleans also deserves some attention, and in "God's Plan," Drizzy offers an instantly iconic phrase tour designed to honor Instagram legends and Tinder bios for the coming months: "I love only my bed and my mom, I'm sorry." He is pithy and peck Drake.
Faced with these standout songs, "No Brainer" seems to be a pretty weak contender for the summer 2018 anthem. Of course, there is always some hysteria to be expected as a result of A new DJ Khaled song, especially when it comes to a plethora of big names like Bieber and Chance. But let 's save the unbridled enthusiasm for a title that really deserves to be called the summer song.
