The Mayo Ladies senior football team was shaken by the departure of a dozen or so panel players before their SFC All-Ireland qualifier against Cavan next Saturday.

Among the players who retired from the team, Captain Sarah Tierney, Vice-Captain Fiona McHale and the all-time leading scorer, Cora Staunton.

The coach of the team Michael McHale of Carnacon (the father of Fiona) is also removed from the game.

It is understood that the players who left the team invoke the well-being of the players as the reason for their decision. Leahy was not willing to comment, as were some of the players contacted

However, Susan Rodgers, of the Mayo Ladies GAA's board of directors, confirmed that the players had left the # 39 team last week.

"Mayo Ladies County Board can confirm that a number of players have left the county panel. Preparations are underway for Saturday's qualifier against Ireland against Cavan and we will not do no other comment before the end of the game. "

The committee officials met the group of about 10 players last Sunday.

Peter Leahy, from Westmeath, is Mayo's manager and his selectors are former Mayo All-Ireland winner Denise McDonagh and Mick Reynolds.

Last Tuesday, a number of players met Leahy to inform them of their decision to leave the panel. Mayo has trained last Thursday without this group. They did not train at the weekend because of club league games in the county.

Mayo was to train last night before playing Cavan at Clones on Saturday in the first round of the All-Ireland qualifying group phase, from where he will qualify for the All-Ireland quarterfinals.
