Prince Charles is set to celebrate his 70th birthday this evening with a private party at Buckingham Palace.

The future king will begin his landmark birthday by having tea with wife Camilla and a group of inspirational people who also turn 70 this year at Spencer House.

The Queen is due to give a speech for the Prince of Wales at the event.

Traditional gun salutes will take place at the Tower of London and Green Park at 1pm, while the bells will be rung at Westminster Abbey at the same time.

In the evening, the Queen has invited members of the royal family as well as Charles’ friends from his private and public life to the palace for an exclusive party.

Two new photos of the prince and his family have been released in order to mark the occasion, both taken in the gardens of Clarence House.

The Prince of Wales also guest edited an issue of Country Life magazine, in which he spoke of his pbadion for cooking grouse and how he lets red squirrels run around his home.

Prince Charles turns 70 on Wednesday (PA)

He revealed he has created a variation on the famous Greek dish moussaka by substituting grouse for lamb and calling it “groussaka”.

At the end of an article about one of his favourite recipes, pheasant crumble pie, the prince said: “I got this recipe from someone I know. It is delicious.

“I invented a grouse one recently, Coq au vin with grouse, as well as moussaka with grouse, it doesn’t always have to be lamb, in other words groussaka!”

Elsewhere in the magazine, Charles described how endangered red squirrels visit his Birkhall home on the Queen’s Balmoral estate.

He said: “They come into the house at Birkhall and we get them chasing each other round and round the inside.

“If I sit here quietly, they will do so around me. Sometimes when I leave my jackets on a chair with nuts in the pockets, I see them with their tails sticking out, as they hunt for nuts – they are incredibly special creatures.”

Grey squirrels, which arrived from North America in the 19th century, now outnumber native red squirrels by more than 15 to one.
