Italian football club AS Roma and its president Jim Pallotta are set to donate a seven-figure sum to to help with Irish Liverpool fan Seán Cox’s recovery from a serious badault he suffered in April.
Mr Cox was attacked by Italian fans outside Anfield ahead of the Champions League semi-final clash between Liverpool and Roma, leaving him in a coma.
Roma have announced they will give an initial €100,000 towards Mr Cox’s medical bills through its Roma Cares foundation, while Mr Pallotta will give an additional €50,000.
While the family would not comment, a source close to the fundraising effort told the Irish Independent the future commitment could reach “a seven-figure sum over the next number of years”.
Officials from the Italian club travelled to Ireland last Friday to meet with Mr Cox’s wife Martina, with Roma agreeing to work with the family on fundraising initiatives that will help cover ongoing costs for Mr Cox over a multi-year period.
“What happened to Seán Cox should never happen to anyone attending a football match,” said Mr Pallotta.
“Our thoughts today, as they have been from day one, are with Seán, Martina and their whole family. We all hope Seán makes as full a recovery as possible.”
AS Roma managing director Mauro Baldissoni said everyone at the club was shocked and saddened by what happened. “Now, having sat down on Friday with Martina and listened to the long journey Seán still has ahead of him, we wanted to make a donation that will help support Seán’s ongoing rehabilitation costs.”
Meanwhile, the launch for the highly anticipated Dublin versus Meath GAA match in aid of Mr Cox took place last night in his home town of Dunboyne.
Dublin boss Jim Gavin and Meath manager Andy McEntee were on hand to garner publicity for the fundraising clash, which will take place on December 16.
The All-Ireland champions will head to Navan to take on their fierce rivals at Páirc Tailteann.
