Sebastian Vettel lit the timesheets in the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix while Lewis Hamilton could handle only one distant fifth.
Vettel wants to bounce back after his nightmare race in Germany Ferrari arrived in Hungary hoping that the slow-speed Hungaroring circuit would suit their machine, and it turned out that Vettel saw Max's Red Bull duo Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo
Verstappen, however, was just seven hundredths of a second off Vettel to suggest that Red Bull could take the fight at Ferrari this weekend.
As for Hamilton, and Mercedes, they seem to have their job cut off Hamilton, who holds 17 points ahead of Vettel, was fifth in both practice sessions, and finished three quarters behind. 39 hours late compared to Vettel.
His Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was even further in sixth place with the Silver Arrows, as he had done in recent seasons, on the slowest non-road circuit. Traditionally, Ferrari also tends to keep some reserve during practice, so Vettel's speed is likely to affect his rivals.
The McLaren team of Fernando Alonso brought a heavily revised car to Hungary, but there has been little improvement.
Alonso, who is celebrating his 37th birthday on Sunday, was only 12th in order, two seconds behind Vettel.
His teammate Stoffel Vandoorne was desperately uncomfortable at the last races, and the Belgian was the last in the standings, nearly a second behind Alonso. He was also fortunate to avoid crashing into the barriers after spinning at turn five.
Elsewhere, Romain Grosjean was the best of the others since he finished seventh for Haas. Carlos Sainz was eighth for Renault ahead of Pierre Gasly de Toro Rosso. Esteban Ocon completed the top 10 in his Force India.
