21st Century Fox has been approved by both companies.

Shareholders voted Friday at Disney green light the $ 71.3 billion purchase of Fox badets. Disney will get Fox's film studio, which includes franchises like "Avatar" and "X-men", as well as cable channels like FX and National Geographic.

Disney also took over Fox's 22 regional sports networks in the case last month to sell them as a way to address the US government's antitrust concerns.

Fox will keep Fox News, Fox Sports and the Fox broadcast network as a separate company.

In a statement, Fox Rupert Murdoch said he was expecting the new merged company to become "preeminent in the entertainment and media industries."

Disney CEO Bob Iger added that his company was "grateful" to Murdoch and Fox's board of directors with the future of these extraordinary companies.

Friday's votes put an end to a long drama about Fox's badets and consolidate Disney's status as an even bigger powerhouse in Hollywood. Disney, which already owns the Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar franchises, has been trying to buy Fox since last December.

This agreement was briefly questioned earlier this summer when Comcast presented a dramatic counter-offer for Fox. After Disney increased its bid, Comcast fell back.

The agreement still needs to be reviewed by international regulators, and companies say that other "customary closing conditions" are still pending.
