Sometimes, driving a car can be like going to the concert. It is as much of the overall feeling as the performance of the individual pieces. I came to this jaded conclusion after struggling to find a way to convey opinions, positive and negative, on this week's review car – the big Volkswagen Touareg SUV.

The help came from an unexpected source: an evening immersed in memory and music with the legendary Cooper Paul Simon. It was his farewell show and my privilege, after too many decades of wonder, to have two tickets for it thanks to a very thoughtful birthday gift.

After listening, singing and struggling with the guitar chords of "Homeward Bound" and & # 39; The Boxer & # 39; (Forget about 'Bridge over Troubled Water', it's impossible) for a lifetime (I've been dropping out for years), I've loved parts of his party so much that I know that I will never forget has been affected. Similarly, some parties have come close to the most forgotten self-indulgence.

I could say something very similar about the Touareg. It's a great orchestra of engineering and technology that, like concert tickets, is not cheap if we want a good place.

And like Simon's song, there was a lot of modern and less traditional. 19659005] This third generation five-seater SUV is more expansive, smarter, much more compound on the road and more equipped than ever before. It's better to watch without being radically different.

There is definitely more space, technology, infotainment, traction power and boot space. It is not, however, as Volkswagen claims, the "biggest leap forward" in the history of SUVs. But there are glorious quantities of inner room. Which begs the question: why not go there as seven places? Rivals, such as the Volvo XC90, Mercedes GLE, BMW X5, can offer three rows (= seven seats). There is a huge demand for such vehicles. Given the excessive loading space (from 113 liters to 810) and seating, this would have been feasible.

Unfortunately, no commercial version is planned, due to legislative changes. It's a big decision: a bit like leaving "Homeward Bound" from Paul Simon's playlist (he did not do it).

And there is the question of price. The level of entry is fine as far as it goes but add some extras or 'packs' and you are in a posh territory. My car had the 286 horsepower 3-liter diesel and all sorts of safety and comfort items, but that costs nearly 20,000 more. Would I pay € 85,000 for a big five-seater VW against some of the snobbish names I just described?

Yet the Touareg's attempts at chic are mostly successful; nowhere more eloquently than in the interior where its modern playlist of dashboard design, central infotainment screens and quality materials are in tune with modern expectations. The dual-screen "Innovision" system gives you a lot of visibility and control. This is a joint effort of the 15in infotainment touch screen (control smartphone integration, air conditioning, etc.) and a group of 12ins digital instrument.

My pbadengers have absorbed this cabin; the room, the sense of the stuffed. I had a wonderful driving position; What really pleased me, though, is that even while swaying in and around the Dublin traffic, parking in difficult places (a lot of systems help for that) c & rsquo; Was so easy to place. Visibility to the rear was reasonably good, but the cameras and the aids provided confidence.

Such elements are essential necessities that buyers need above all to be happy before the Touareg's tour de force. open road where, pushed hard, he was memorable powerful and pacy. Big diesel has increased power with a semi-silent whoosh. With AWD, we have covered surfaces of varying qualities without intrusive noise or disturbed driving rhythms – testifying to excellent engineering of handling, driving and stability. The DSG 8spd's automatic transmission was seamless but, perhaps, it could have kicked me faster when I wanted to accelerate. Overall, however, it was the quality on the road.

A small quirk was the system that made me put my hands on the wheel – when they were already there. I think the lane warning system may have been too sensitive. Or maybe I did not have a tight enough grip (I considered that it was normal). The question is: who determines this? By the way, there are nearly two dozen onboard driver badistance systems, including the excellent adaptive cruise control.

All in all, I must say that this new Touareg was like a good concert

It had individual segments of real highs (interior, driving ability, technology, space) mixed with interludes. not-so-high (acceleration, price and only five seats). Anyway, I think it's worth sampling.
