When you see the phrase “seasick crocodile,” do you hear Thurl Ravenscroft?
If you’re a kid between the ages of 6 and 60, the answer probably is “yes,” even if you didn’t know his name. Ravenscroft memorably crooned all the creative insults of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” in the 1966 TV clbadic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
“Your heart is full of unwashed socks / Your soul is full of gunk,” anyone?
Still, times change. And on Nov. 9, there’s a new animated “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” coming to theaters and starring Benedict Cumberbatch. And with it comes a new version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by Tyler, the Creator.
Tyler’s updated version, which includes a children’s choir, probably isn’t going to race up the charts. Still, it’s worth a listen. As for whose version is better, a 27-year-old rapper or the voice of Tony the Tiger, we’re not going to touch that with a 39½-foot pole. (And no, we’re not going to even discuss Jim Carrey’s version for the 2000 live-action film. Sorry.)
