Unai Emery reveals what he said to Arsenal players at half-time after lacklustre display against Sporting

Danny Welbeck fired Arsenal one step closer to their longest ever winning run in Sporting Lisbon.

But boss Unai Emery warned his players history is a long way off after they made it 11 wins on the spin.

Welbeck’s 77 minute strike maintained Group E leaders Arsenal’s 100 per cent start to their Europa League bid after three games.

Three more wins would equal the Gunners’ best ever streak of victories set back in 1987 under George Graham.

They face Crystal Palace in the league and Blackpool in the Carabao Cup next Wednesday.

They could match their record of 14 successive wins against Liverpool on Saturday week.

Emery said: “Three short of all time record? Three matches. They are a lot of matches. We are thinking only of the next one against Crystal Palace and also to enjoy each moment with our supporters.

“We are thinking three points in Crystal Palace but it is very difficult to win there. For us to continue to win we want that but we know we can lose at any moment.”

Once again Arsenal started slowly and Emery admitted he needed to say some strong words at half time to spark his side into life.

He said: “We spoke about this before the match. One objective is this. Most important is the dressing room at half time.

“We cannot impose our game in first 45 minutes but we have opportunity to change the result in second half and think only of winning this match and improving things.

“We did that. We need to continue finding the solution for the first half to be better.”

Emery also played down a late flashpoint when Stephan Lichtsteiner appeared to be headbutted off the ball by former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates who escaped punishment.

He said: “I didn’t look. Things happen in the pitch.”
