It wasn’t the first crossover to hit Britain’s roads, but the Qashqai was the car that revolutionised this segment of the industry when Nissan launched it 11 years ago. Good-looking, inexpensive and practical, it was the first to successfully combine the style, space and driving position of an SUV with the practicalities and affordability of a hatchback.
This proved to be a winning formula, with Nissan selling over a million of these cars since 2007. Today the Qashqai continues to be the UK’s third highest-selling car (behind the Ford Fiesta and Focus). And the good news is that the original (and arguably the best) family crossover just keeps getting better.
This car will get a complete facelift in 2019 – not that it looks at all dated. But if you can’t wait until then, the current 2018 version comes with enough bells and whistles to make a fine bargain buy.
The star of the show is Nissan’s new semi-autonomous ProPilot technology that comes as a £795 upgrade on its most popular Tekna model, or as standard on the top-of-the-range Pilot One Edition.
So what does it do?
Essentially by using a host of cameras and radars, the Intelligent Cruise Control system in theory can drive the car on major roads for hundreds of miles without intervention.
