A song featuring Beyonce lost out

Best urban fusion/performance went to Rosalia’s “Malamente.” J Balvin’s “Mi Gente” remix with Beyonce was nominated in the same category. Daddy Yankee was also nominated alongside the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. An emotional Rosalia accepted the award on stage.

Will Smith rapped his heart out in a shimmering suit

Smith and Marc Anthony kicked off the night with an energetic performance that had the crowd on their feet from the start of the night. Smith rapped in English and made his way to the stage to join Anthony and Bad Bunny. The performers sang their tune “Esta Rico” and were accompanied by scantily clad dancers in leotards, all dancing on different parts of the stage until about halfway through when the men met in the middle and took turns at center stage.

Country music met Latin music when Kane Brown turned up

Brown showed up to present the award for best salsa album. Brown said he was happy to present an award that had close ties to the U.S., saying the genre was born in America in the ’60s. Victor Manuelle took home the trophy for “25/7.”

Karol G. brought her dad onstage to celebrate 

In a dress with a truly never-ending slit, Karol G. brought her dad with her onstage to accept her award for best new artist. She said she was very nervous as she began her speech, but she quickly got more comfortable, reflecting on how she swore just a few years ago while she was watching the show that she’d earn a Latin Grammy. She then let her father take over the mic and he ended their speech with some celebratory words. 

What?! There was a tie?

The presenters and audience alike were shocked when it was announced there was a tie in the category of best Norteño album. Pesado’s “Los Angeles Existen” and Calibre 50’s “Guerra de Poder” both won. 

A plea to end gun violence 

Things got more serious when the night’s hosts, Ana de la Reguera and Carlos Rivera, made a plea to end gun violence, noting music has the power to heal and bring people together, before introducing a performance by Kany Garcia. She sang the ballad “Para Siempre” while playing guitar.  

The crowd got rowdy

Luis Miguel wasn’t there to accept his award for album of the year and the crowd wasn’t having it. They booed wildly at his absence, and they didn’t cheer up too quickly. The murmured jeers continued until the next musical performance.
