Wolf guard Carl Ikeme retires after battle against leukemia

Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme announced his retirement a month after revealing that he was in complete remission of acute leukemia.

The 32-year-old had spent the last 12 months battling the disease. victory over Fulham in March 2017.

Ikeme made more than 200 appearances for Wolves, the club that he joined at the age of 14, winning two promotions, and also spent spells on loan in Accrington, Stockport, Charlton, Sheffield United, QPR, Leicester, Middlesbrough and Doncaster.

Ikeme said on Wolves TV: "After talking to the doctor, he suggested that I retire, just the treatment, the toll it takes on my body, I can not risk coming back

"My health is the main thing and I just want to be here to my children and family and friends. It's difficult when you look at what you have experienced in your football career, but in the grand scheme of things, with your life at risk, it's a minimum price I have to pay. "

Born in Sutton Coldfield of the Nigerian heritage, Ikeme won 10 caps for the Super Eagles, who honored him at this summer's World Cup by naming him a member of the 24th team

"When Carl came to tell us his news, yes there was sadness, but also a great happiness to see him so healthy and hungry for the opportunities that awaited him.

"Carl is strong, a fighter, something that he has proven in his playing career and also during what has been a very difficult time for him, so I have no doubt that It will be a success in everything it will do next.

"We wish Carl all the best for the future, but remind him that there will always remain some of Wolves, family. "

Ikeme is still not sure what his next steps will be, but he has already been offered a role at Molineux where he wants it.

He said, "I do not even know (what's next) be honest, I'm thinking of a holiday, I've talked to the club and they're happy to facilitate everything I want to do, if i want to come and be part of the club in a personal way they are happy for maybe doing some work on the media or maybe just being a fan.

"Maybe in a near future just come to games and catch up with people. But certainly something to do with wolves or in and around Wolverhampton because this has been my club and my adopted city. "
