It might be a bit soon to call it the ‘iPhone killer’ – but smartphone giant Xiaomi has launched its flagship handset, the Mi 8 Pro, outside China for the first time.
Even if you haven’t heard of the brand before, Xiaomi is the fourth-largest smartphone maker in the world by market share, and their latest move is definitely a shot across the bows of Apple, Samsung and Huawei.
With its own-brand store opening in London this week, the impressive Mi 8 Pro is now officially available in this part of the world.
The phone’s unique glbad case shows some of its internal components and includes a fingerprint sensor built into the 6.2 inch AMOLED screen, as well as dual 12-megapixel cameras.
It runs on a customised version of Google’s Android operating system – so it won’t be short on apps.
Arguably the most interesting aspect of this handset, is the price. Xiaomi is selling this model in the UK with a starting price of £499 – a clear challenge to phones with similar specs on the market for over £700.
This is part of a strategy that Xiaomi call ‘honest pricing’, and is sure to go down well with consumers.
At the launch, Wang Xiang, the firm’s senior vice president, said: ‘Today we witness a new chapter in Xiaomi’s global expansion journey, underpinned by our global ambitions.
‘We are thrilled to make great strides by announcing our arrival in the UK.
‘By bringing a range of our amazing products at honest pricing we want to offer more choices and let everyone in the UK enjoy a connected simple life through our innovative technology.’
Given that Xiaomi handsets are currently available through the Three network in Ireland, chances are this phone will soon be for sale there.
