Holidaymakers hoping to acquire an impressive tan should only sunbathe on alternate days to take advantage of the body’s natural cycle, a new study suggests.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University, in Israel, have discovered that the pigmentation process which protects the skin from damaging rays works on a 48 hour cycle.

However if people sunbathe daily, the full sequence does not have time to run and so a tan takes longer to build.

In human skin cells, researchers found that those exposed to UV rays on a daily basis developed around half the tan as those exposed every two days.
