New HIV drug kills 99% of virus in first human trial – Punch Newspapers

A new HIV drug created by Israeli researchers has successfully completed its first clinical trial on humans.

At the end of the trial, it was discovered that the drug, called Gammora, created by Zion Medical, an Israeli biotech company, was able to eliminate 99% of HIV-infected cells in the human body.

According to a statement issued by the company and available on PR NewswireGammora was able to eliminate up to 90% of the virus in the first four weeks of the trial.

Zion Medical has developed the drug Gammora in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Sirion Biotech in Germany.

The drug is designed to attack and kill HIV-infected cells in the human body without causing damage to healthy cells.

As part of the study, researchers randomly badigned nine participating patients from Ronald Bata Memorial Hospital in Uganda to receive different doses of Gammora between four and five weeks in July and August of this year.

While the new anti-HIV drug is still in its first stage of exploration, the results have already given hope that a cure for the dreaded virus would be possible.

"Most patients experienced a significant reduction in viral load of up to 90% from baseline in the first four weeks," said Dr. Esmira Naftalim, development manager at Zion Medical.
