(Space.com) The first Israeli lunar lander did not live up to its historic landing this afternoon (11 April).
The Beresheet robotic spacecraft, built by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), aimed to become the first Israeli craft and the first privately funded mission to land softly on the moon. But the little robot could not do everything, collapsing in the gray earth around 3:25 pm. EDT (19:25 GMT). Mission control lost communication with the satellite when it was about 149 meters above the moon's surface.
"We had a failure in the spaceship; we have unfortunately failed to land, "said Opher Doron, chief executive officer of IAI, during a live broadcast of the mission control. "It's a tremendous success so far."
