MOSCOW, August 21 / TASS /. The International Space Station (ISS) crew gathered inside the Russian segment and closed the hatches following an air leak detected aboard the orbital outpost, a door – speech by Russian space company Roscosmos on Friday.

“The hatches in the US segment and between the US and Russian segments have been closed,” the spokesperson said, adding that the crew will remain inside the Russian segment until Monday evening. In collaboration with specialists from mission control centers, they will monitor the air pressure inside the closed modules to spot the site of possible air leaks.

“The results of this work will be discussed with the partners in the first half of the day on Monday and another action plan will be decided after that,” the spokesperson said.

Previously, the hatches of the Russian module MIM-1, the Russian module SO-1 (Pirs) and the Progress MS-15 supply ship at the dock were closed. According to Roscosmos, “the data received from the ISS crew, which monitors the pressure levels in the modules, indicate that the pressure remains normal”.

Air leak on the ISS

A source told TASS on August 20 that the Russian-American ISS crew were looking for a discovered air leak. As the source said, “the air leak was recorded by sensors from the Russian segment of the station to measure the nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide content in the station’s atmosphere.”

The crew members planned to sequentially seal the station modules to locate the area where the pressure was decreasing.

Roscosmos told TASS that all ISS crew members will travel to the Zvezda service module for three days to organize air pressure monitoring in modules in the US segment. As Roscosmos clarified, “during the three-day stay in the Russian segment, the crew will perform routine work”.

The ISS crew includes NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner.
