One can only love St. Thomas the Apostle, an icon of our desire for certainties and the voice of our fears. The Gospel of John is above all the role of the skeptic, the one who continually tests the Word of God, who expresses doubts, who wants proof of facts. The most known episode is that reported in chapter 20 of the Gospel of John: after the resurrection, Jesus presents himself to the apostles but Thomas is not there. Upon his return, he expresses disbelief; Eight days later, Jesus comes back and turns to Thomas: "Put your finger here and look at my hands; hold out your hand and place it in my side; and do not be incredulous, but believe! "My Lord and my God!" Answers Thomas. The conclusion concerns us all: "Happy are those who have not seen and believed!" According to some sources, Thomas would have brought the Gospel to India, where he would have died as a martyr.
