Cancer is also avoided at the table: here is the decalogue of the choices that protect us

[ad_1]

"One in three cancers can be avoided at the table," experts say for several years, considering as a risk factor both overweight and obesity, as well as some compounds with which we are at risk. contact more often by eating certain foods or promoting high temperature cooking.

And in fact, many cancers can get sick if you follow a "poor" diet from a nutritional point of view. Specifically, the risk is increased for tumors of the lung and gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, colon-rectum) in men, for those of the liver and bad (after menopause) in women.

Food quality and cancer risk

The findings of a research published in the journal "Plos Medicine", which represents the last stage of the project "Epic": the maxi-studio launched twenty-five years ago to study the role of food and more generally life styles in the onset of oncological diseases. The pool of researchers led by Melanie Deschasaux, epidemiologist of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, collected data on the food consumption of more than 471,000 Europeans.

The next step was to measure the quality of the diet through software developed by the British Food Standard Agency, which also prompted the French to create "Nutri-Score", a labeling system to identify values. Nutrition of a product on an alphabetical scale (AE) and colored from green to red (in five gradations).

These results were then compared with the figures relating to the incidence of oncological diseases. Just under fifty thousand new diagnoses were recorded in fifteen years: bad, prostate and colorectal tumors were the most frequent. By cross-referencing information about diet quality with cancer incidence rates, the researchers concluded that "regular consumption of poor quality food is badociated with increased risk of developing different neoplasms", most of them being even among those who "weigh" the most in numerical terms.

"Traffic light" label to guide consumers

The results of this study have strengthened the evidence to support software such as "Nutri-Score", considered useful for promoting the choice of healthier foods. This aspect is now considered necessary, given the growing evidence that links the quality of diet to the probability of becoming ill with different forms of cancer.

Experts believe that the benefit also concerns the prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The idea was born in France, but a few weeks ago it was announced that Belgium would also adopt a "traffic light" label.

At the present time, companies have no obligation, but only a faculty allowing consumers to learn more easily about different foods. The ultimate goal is to influence choices in order to spread good eating habits in the population. Salt, saturated fats, fiber and sugars: these are the ingredients placed in the spotlight by the scientific community, following tests that correlate their excessive consumption with a generally lower health status and a higher risk of developing various chronic diseases.

At least 12 tumors related to unnecessary pounds

In addition to measuring the effectiveness of a food quality labeling system as a public health protection tool, the research confirms the impact that it has. Diet can have on the definition of cancer risk. What indications to follow to shelter? It is worth revisiting the recent advice from the World Cancer Research Fund, which in its third report on cancer focused on diet (as well as physical activity) as a whole. as a key element of prevention.

According to the report, at least 12 tumors (oral cavity, bad, esophagus, colorectal, pancreas, gallbladder, liver, kidneys, ovaries, cervix, endometrium, and prostate) are affected by the effect of extra pounds. All diseases that, in terms of incidence, are developing in Western countries.

THE DECALOGUE TO BE FOLLOWED TO PREVENT CANCER

The organization has therefore chosen to develop a set of preventive advice: always keep your weight within the limits of normalcy; to do physical activity; eat a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes; limit the consumption of ready-to-use and processed foods, high in fats and sugars; limit the consumption of red and processed meat; do not overdo sugary drinks; do not drink alcohol; do not use supplements to prevent tumors; badfeed their children; follow nutritional recommendations even after a cancer diagnosis
