For the first time, a cerebral aneurysm was performed in the awake patient, a procedure that physicians have prepared to monitor their cognitive, visual, motor and sensory functions. The groundbreaking intervention was carried out on November 14 by the operational neurosurgery unit of the Trento Hospital led by Professor Franco Chioffi. To announce the success of the operation, the director general of the Provincial Agency of Health Services (APSS), Paolo Bordon, congratulated the team of specialists very satisfied.

The procedure he matured in the experience of the elimination of brain tumors, which is often practiced on perfectly awake patients. In some cases, patients with singing or music skills who undergo these treatments are advised to perform during the operation, also to relieve the tension of an important intervention in the brain. In the case of the Trento operation, Professor Chioffi's team applied a technique of "awake cutting"; in layman's terms, after the application of the special metal staple to block the cerebral aneurysm, the dilation of a vessel likely to trigger a very dangerous haemorrhage, the patient was awake to check its different functions.

As indicated on the press release issued by the press office of the autonomous province of Trento, the operation has been perfectly successful without complication of any kind for the patient. The woman was released a few days after the operation "in perfect neuro-clinical condition and completely cured of the cerebral aneurysm". Last June, the provincial Forlì-Cesena hemodynamic unit performed another innovative intervention to treat aneurysm, in this case coronary heart disease.
