LG will not introduce short-term folding smartphones. The statement was made public by South Korean media, Brian Kwon, the new director of LG Mobile. The reasoning is that the company has other priorities, such as regaining its position in the market after a few years of decline and failures.
The folding smartphone is always too full of uncertainties to represent a valid strategy in this sense: we do not even know yet what is the good form factor, we do not know if and how much it will actually fit, and its commercial success is largely unknown. It's not a question of technology: with the roll-up TV, LG has proved to be at the forefront of technology. Kwon says the company has been researching and experimenting in this area for years, but its role is to keep moving forward (as we know, there are only a few days left for the launch of the Samsung and Huawei proposals).
Of course, this does not mean that LG has abandoned the concept of folding smartphones indefinitely. Kwon says the company is "absolutely ready" to respond to the market if consumer demand will prove sufficiently robust. In anticipation of whether this will happen, LG will continue to introduce other innovative smartphones: at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, will come, in addition to the G8, the first 5G smartphone.
