In 2017 in Italy, 3,443 new diagnoses of HIV infection were reported, or 5.7 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure in line with the European average. In the light of the World Day of 1 December, data from the Center for AIDS Control (COA) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS).

In 2017, among the regions of more than one and a half million inhabitants, the highest incidence rates were recorded in Lazio, Liguria and Tuscany. The people who discovered that they were HIV positive in 2017 were men in 76.2% of cases.
The median age was 39 years for men and 34 years for women. In the case of AIDS, the observatory recorded 690, an incidence of 1.1 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a slight decrease in recent years.
