Amazon has officially become a postal operator. The specific register of the Ministry of Economic Development in the last update of November shows Amazon Italy Logistics and Amazon Italy Transport. At this point, he should close the quarrel with the AGCM that had sanctioned the American giant for 300,000 euros precisely because he had carried out a series of "postal activities" without authorization : including deliveries to partners and the use of lockers.
The first side effect will be in the company's logistics and delivery chain with the possible adoption of the postal sector national contract. Despite the fact that some obligations arise from different parameters defined by the rules, the change is not obvious. Secondly, each shipping company will be subject to the supervision of AGCOM, as happens for other operators.
Now, regardless of the contracts, it remains to be seen if Amazon plans to become a direct competitor of Poste Italiane, Nexive and the other 4,000 operators with traditional services or will remain solely responsible for e-commerce.
Potentially, there would be the management of mail, parcels and the like, but would they have a sense and sufficient margins for Amazon? What is certain is that a primary client might be inclined to entrust everything to the company, as it normally provides above average quality standards of customer service. But it is also true that the operation would require a significant logistical effort.
