Are migrants always an emergency?

16,566 migrants landed on the Italian coast from January 1 to June 28, 2018. In the same months of the previous year, 2017, a total of 79,154 had arrived while In 2016 the arrivals had been over 67 thousand. In terms of percentage, the figure jumps even more in the eyes: compared to the same period in 2017, landings decreased by 79.07%

The data come from the usual statistical panel of the Viminale, which documents also how the first six months of 2018, migrants from Libya were 11,401, down 84.94% from 2017 when migrants arriving from Tripoli were over 75 thousand. In short, departures from Libya have been significantly reduced, although clarification needs to be made. As is known, the collapse of landings only occurred from August 2017, after the trip to the former Minister of the Interior Marco Minniti Tripoli

As the graph below shows, today's figures are roughly in line with those recorded since the end of last summer: this does not mean that the "problem" has been resolved – we must not forget that the agreement with the Libyan authorities is necessarily fragile, also because of the chaotic situation there is in this country – but the emergence of the land seems certainly much reduced.

In the first six months of 2018, as we mentioned above, asylum seekers arrived on our coasts are only 16 000. Imagine – taking into account also the policy of the new government on landings and the closure of ports to NGOs – that the total number is destined to be much lower

If we look however, we find that 18% of migrants arriving in 2018 come from Tunisia and therefore would not be entitled to refugee status, followed by Eritrea ( 16%), Sudan (9%), Nigeria, Costa D & Ivory and Mali

One question that many Italians do is related to the number of irregular presences in our country. In this respect, it is fair to make an badumption: for obvious reasons, it is impossible to make an accurate estimate of illegal immigrants in Italy. According to the latest data from Ismu, the number of irregular aliens present in Italy as of 1 January 2017 was 491 thousand foreigners, compared with 435 thousand the previous year (knowing however that in 2008 there was there were at least 650 thousand irregularities in Italy).

According to the Ismu Foundation it was almost six million (5 million and 958 thousand) the presence of foreign citizens, regular and not, as of January 1, 2017, either an increase of 87 thousand units (+ 1.5%) over the previous year, mainly due to the irregular component (+ 56,000)
